Mr. Jameson wrote to his wife, Margaret, that night. It was a loving letter, full of tenderness. He told her not to hurry back, but if she liked it in Bath, to stay a month longer. He was getting on nicely. Though he missed her, he was willing to bear the separation a while longer, realizing that her father’s health was the first thing to be considered.

As for Margaret, she was charmed upon receiving her husband’s letter. She was doing well, but her father was on his deathbed. Many of her old friends and acquaintances were in Bath. And the first free breath since her marriage seemed to restore the pleasant liberty of her maiden days. Devoted as she was to her husband, her life of a village solicitor’s wife was something which she was more than willing to forego for a while to be the daughter of a very rich land broker.

Two months after the storm passed and six weeks after her father died, Mrs. Margaret Jameson broke her neck and died.
